Dancer Resource Dialogue: Jess Spinner, The Whole Dancer

Tell us about yourself

I’m a former professional dancer turned health, nutrition, and lifestyle coach for aspiring and professional dancers. I help dancers discover a balanced relationship to food and their bodies so they can put the focus back on the dancing. I struggled throughout my whole dance journey after receiving my first body comment at age 14. This led me to start my first diet and I continued to diet as my weight yo-yoed throughout my entire dance journey. When the focus was put on my body and food it stole the joy from my dancing.

Which story/stories stood out to you and why?

Honestly, they all resonate with me and I relate to most of them. I’m especially connected to the ones that involve a dancer being told her body is “wrong” in some way.

If you could send a message to the dancer who shared that story, what would it be?

Your body is not just your instrument, it’s your home. It’s valuable and worthy of love and care regardless of what it looks like or what anyone else says about it. Shift your focus to caring for your body and loving yourself and refuse to let anyone steal your love for dancing.

How can your resource or community help this dancer or someone going through something similar?

I support dancers through 1:1 coaching, group coaching, online courses, and various free resources on my website and through my email list. Reach out for a complimentary coaching call (no obligation, free 20-minutes of coaching) if you’re looking for support. If I’m not the right person to support you I’ll refer you to one of the brilliant experts in my referral network.

How can dancers reach you?
